UniProtKB description: Catalyzes the cyclization of squalene to two pentacyclic triterpenes, hop-22(29)-ene and hopan-22-ol (diplopterol); hopene and hopanol are formed at a constant ratio of 5:1. Is a key enzyme of hopanoid biosynthesis; hopanoids are components of the bacterial cytoplasmic membranes that play a vital role in stabilizing the membranes.
